I would like to write about basic shortcut commands and troubles that beginners often run into for beginners who are just starting to use Finale.

Shortcut Commands

  • R : convert to rest
  • T : add to tie
  • -(hyphen) : lower a semitone
  • Shift + ; : raise a semitone
  • G : convert to grace note
  • H or O : hide notes and rests
  • P : show courtesy accidental
  • L : reverse stem
  • / : connect beam/break beam
  • 9 : convert to enharmonic
  • Shift + up/down arrow keys – change layer
  • Measure selected with “selection tool” > command + right/left arrow key : Measures can be moved to the next/previous paragraph (simple function of “fit measures”)

Troubles that beginners often run into

Q : Even though you created a new tempo mark using the “Expression” tool, the tempo is strange when you play it back.

A : Tempo mark selected with ”Edit” > “Playback” > change the value of “Set to Value” and click “OK”

Q : No sound when playing back

A : “MIDI/Audio” > “Device Setup” > “Audio Setup” > “Output Source”

Q : I closed the main tool palette window.

A : You can redisplay various windows from “Window”.

Q : change the notation of transposing instrument to actual pitch notation.

A : “Window” > “Score Manager” > with the part you want to change selected, select “None” from “Transposition”.

6 Aug, 2024 : Additional Note
I didn’t realize it until recently, you can easily write the actual pitch of a transposing instrument using the following method.
“Document” > “Display in Concert Pitch”

I guess it’s something like this for now.

I will add any other basic useful functions or problems that beginners may have.
